OLD FOLKS DAY

This is the bust of Charles Savage...Didn't really know who he was until this trip to Utah..

He and others started "Old Folks Day" back on 1875! Since I'm getting up there in age, I thought it only appropriate we start it up again!

Base and Meridian

So..Let me tell you a little about my Uncle Doug. He's my mom's brother..and a bit of a jokester (like my mom) Since it was my first time in the Salt Lake Temple (I've wanted to go inside for as long as I can remember) he and my brother Bill were giving me bits of trivia. I, of course, am very gullable. I've fallen for many of my Uncle Doug's "stories" so I now make him prove them all to me. He mentioned the story of Temple Square. Brigham Young looked out on the valley of Salt Lake, and chose the spot for the Temple. He put his mark on one corner and the Temple was started. Here is the "Mark" I made my uncle pose just in case he was pulling my leg...

Temple Square

After the wedding, Grant, I and Macen took a walk around Temple Square. The most peaceful spot in the world. Here's Macen and I in front of the temple and reflecting pond.
Macen giving me a kiss!
This is in honor of the "Stone Cutter" film..If you've never seen it..ask a mormon friend..This was etched by a man who WALKED 22 miles every monday to work every day until friday..when he would walk the 22 miles home. One day, while doing chores around the farm, the family cow kicked him in the leg..and the leg SHATTERED. After he healed as much as he could, he made an artificial leg, and continued his mission of etching those words in to the temple. He passed away without ever seeing the Salt Lake Temple completed (It took 40 years) I am still in awe of the Pioneers!
One more picture of Mac and me..(mom, this is so you can't say I never post pictures of myself!)

The Lunch

We went to the "Lion House" for the wedding lunch. It's the best place EVER! Brigham Youngs house..for those of you who have never heard of it! The make fresh hot spring rolls with fresh honey butter. Grant thought I was crazy when I told them how goor they are...He's a believer now! The picture is the flower garden in front of the house...That's what I want my garden to look like!

Monday #6 How Many Trees fit in your Mailbox?

Monday #6..Get Rid Of Junk Mail
FACTS:
  • Junk-mail delveries surpass the number of U.S. Postal Service 1st-class mail.
  • Even though 44% of all junk mail is discarded without being opened, people will still spend 8 months of their lives opening junk mail.
  • Only 2% of junk mail gets a response.
  • 100 million trees are needed to produce the annual supply of bulk mail--that's the equivalent of deforesting the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every four months.
  • Over $350 million taxpayer dollars are spent annually to dispose of junk mail that does not get recycled.
  • 5.6 million tons of catalogs and other direct-mail advertisements end up in landfills annually.
  • The average person receives only 1.5 personal letters each week compared to 10.8 pieces of junk mail.
  • Paper will take up 48% of our landfills by 2010

TAKE ACTION TODAY

  1. Write "Please do not rent or sell my name" next to your name whenever you enter a contest, make a purchase or donation, join a buyer's club, order a produvt by mail, subscribe to a magazine, or return a warranty card.
  2. Call the customer service number of the company or organization that is sending you unwanted mail and ask to be removed from their list.
  3. Remove your name from several national mailing lists through the Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service. You can register online or by mail.
  4. Contact major consumer credit bureaus to have your name removed from mailing lists used for credit offers.

YOU MATTER

500 pieces of junk mail per person per year..what a waste.
By decreasing your junk mailtim, you'll save trees, save waste, decrease pollution, save time, and save the mail carrier's back because he or she won't have to deliver MAIL THAT YOU DON"T READ ANYWAY
